Cultural History

This chapter focuses on the history of Dostoevsky’s academic and intellectual reception in Romania. Relying primarily on the seminal work of scholar Dinu Pillat (1921-1975), my discussion begins with the pre-Communist period, a milieu dominated by nationalist and religious ideas. I move next to the Communist period, during which, after a couple of decades where Dostoevsky was virtually absent, a series of scholars praised the author and created robust scholarship. Following a chronological framework, this chapter also examines how literary and theological interpretations of Dostoevsky changed in Romania after the fall of the totalitarian regime. Analysing Dostoevsky’s reception in Romania shows how his work gains in meaning and context relative to the culture or society that his writings inform. We also see how his own political and religious views made him attractive for some and problematic for others. The Romanian experience shows that genuine philosophical value transcends political interests.

The article presents the FBS Collection‘s project, which focuses on establishing the FBS Foundation,  devoted to fomenting the study of the history of photography from a scientific and interdisciplinary point of view. The first part is devoted to the evolution of the collection by periods between  1978 and 2023: The thrill of stereoscopy (1978 to 1985), The universe of suppliers and collectors (1985 to 1996), Immersion in the world of stereoscopy (1996 to 2008), The volume and variety of the collection have grown so, that they overflow its current space (2008 to 2015), Utility and preservation of the collection as a whole (2015 to 2020), Viability of the Foundation and formation of multidisciplinary research groups (2020 to 2023). The second part will reflect on the elements and subcategories within the collection. And the third part will focus on new activities and applications for the collection in different disciplines, the activities already undertaken and those we hope to develop in the field of neuroscience, among others.

O livro Roseira brava , de Palmyra Wanderley, foi publicado pela primeira vez em 1929. Em seus versos a autora apresenta tendencias nas quais se destacam caracteristicas tardias do Romantismo, mas tambem deixa antever tracos da estetica modernista. O objetivo deste artigo e analisar poemas de Palmyra Wanderley, presentes em Roseira brava , que abordam a tematica da cidade Natal, observando a tematica como categoria de analise qualitativa da obra. This issue of OnCurating aims to shed light on the complex and often-times concealed economic basis of art production and exhibition-making. The contributions cover a range of issues from a highly speculative financial model of the art market, public funding mechanisms, and attempts of building alternative economic systems.

The compilation of texts are to be read in the context of two key problems related to arts funding. Firstly, the art market’s speculative value creation favours singular artistic production of reification/objectification, emphasises the funding of singular artists, and reaffirms its own hegemonic structure in the light of an economic system of speculation that commodifies with the help of (public) funding bodies and the arts field at large. Secondly, between the state-based public funding paradigms and their complicity or resistance to the reproduction of unequal relations and perpetuation of (neo-)colonial dichotomies through a centre-periphery model.

This issue came into being alongside the conference in June 2022 “Speculations on Funding”, generously supported by ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) at CAMP Notes on Education, documenta Fifteen in Kassel, Germany.

This anthology is about the representations and uses of medieval saints, heroes, and heroic events as elements of popular, local, and national culture during the 19th and 20th centuries in the Baltic Sea region: Scandinavia, Finland, Baltic countries, Northern Germany and NorthWestern Russia. Authors examine the processes of how medieval saints and heroes have been remembered, commemorated, interpreted, used, and refl ected during modernity, and by whom.

Following World War I, conquering heroes from the US roam about Paris and are surprised by increasing change in the postwar period that has substituted heroes of conquests by heralds of consumption whose semiotic modalities no more run parallel with notions of performance, virility and effectiveness. It is the crisis of the heroic model of conquest inherited from modernity.

For the last 10 years, we have been carefully excavating rich, well-stratified Middle Stone Age (MSA) horizons from Sibhudu in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This work has provided a great abundance of numerous classes of cultural material from well-controlled contexts dating to between > 90 and 36 ka that is relevant for documenting the Late Pleistocene cultural evolution of Homo sapiens in Africa. In this paper, we look more closely at intra-site spatial relationships between the finds and critically examine their context to determine what has been learned through such careful excavation. The effort is justified because through excavation we destroy sites, necessitating the recovery of as much relevant information as is possible and practicable, for ourselves and for future generations. This paper analyzes Deepa Anappara’s novel Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line (2020) from a decolonial ecoGothic perspective to show how the novel exposes the human and ecological crises in an urban slum known as a “basti” in an unnamed part of present-day India. The paper argues that Anappara uses the child narrator Jai and the gothic tropes of “Bhoot,” “Djinn,” and “smog” to convey the violent and traumatic experiences of marginalized communities residing in the slum. The novel uncovers child kidnappings, murders, and toxic waste dumps. This paper explores how Anappara employs the imagery of South Asian Gothic tropes as devices to create a postcolonial urban ecoGothic highlighting the ecological and climatic crises that arise out of the gentrification of the city and the growing divide between the slum dwellers and the privileged inhabitants of high-rise gated communities. This thesis is a description and analysis of the Colombian bambuco, an autochthonous dance and song genre, as a tricultural musical form. Identifying the bambuco as a distinctive genre firstly within Colombian national music and then within the Colombian Andean region, a primary analysis studies its various ensemble contexts and identifies an archetypal rhythmic structure for the bambuco's melody and accompaniment. The analysis proceeds seeking to identify relationships which may exist between the bambuco and Amerindian, Spanish and Black African sources. The principal tools for the traditionally problematic identification of the bambuco's Black African roots are: 1. the original hypothesis that African rhythmic bell patterns in the form of 'clave patterns' can occur in the melodic rhythm of Afro-American genres when they do not necessarily occur in the rhythmic accompaniment, and 2. Folklore adalah adat istiadat tradisi tradisional dan cerita rakyat yang diwariskan secara turun temurun. Ada 3 macam folklore yaitu foklore lisan, folklore sebagian lisan, dan folklore bukan lisan. Jenis penelitian plaho ini merupakan jenis penelitian foklore sebagian lisan yang mencampurkan dua unsur yaitu upacara dan mantra. Makna yang di pakai adalah makna kultural yang mana penelitian ini berfokus pada makna leksikal dan kultural dari mantra dan bahan alat tradisi lisan plaho ini. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah makna dari mantra dan alat bahan yang terdapat dalam pelaksanaan tradisi lisan plaho. Di temukan 10 mantra dan 35 macam bahan dan alat dalam penelitian ini.

Description This paper will analyze the historical and cultural conditions that affected how the German Democratic Republic treated one of its largest minority groups, the Vietnamese. During the height of the Cold War and as Decolonization reached its peak phase in the 1960s and 70s, these two factors pushed the GDR and Vietnam closer, which resulted in an exchange in workers. Contract Workers were brought to the GDR to work in an environment "united in socialist solidarity." However, despite this rhetoric, age-old racism, xenophobia, and Orientalism still infiltrated the so called "Socialist Paradise," as the GDR was often called by its own press.

Publication by A. V. Antoshchenko includes the letters of the Professor of the St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute George Fedotov to his disciple Igor’ Vernik. Those letters are stored in the Bakhmeteff Archive of Russian and East European History and Culture at Columbia University (USA). They allow to understand the nature of the relationship between the teacher and his pupil and to explain the motives of George Fedotov’s contradiction with other professors of the Institute.

The aim of the study is to explore the medieval concepts on the voluntary death of severely sick people, as they emerge through the endura (endurance) of the heresy of the Cathars in France (twelfth to fourteenth centuries). The endura was the prerequisite act of repentance that would allow the fallen soul to return to heaven. The endura was a necessary act of repentance, after the performance of a ceremonial purification of the soul (consolamentum), and consisted of the patients' voluntary abstention from vital food. The consolamentum and endura could be performed in the final stage of a disease with the consent of the patients or their relatives. The role of the Cathar physician was only to determine the severity of the disease and the forthcoming death of the patient. Materiales y metodos. Se realizaron distintas formulaciones modificando el agente pulidor asi como el polietilenglicol utilizado. Estas formulaciones se sometieron a pruebas de estabilidad a 4, 25 y 37oC por un periodo de un mes. Toda vez pasadas las pruebas de estabilidad se evaluaron las caracteristicas fisicas de las formulaciones en un grupo control. La formulacion mejor evaluada fue la que se utilizo posteriormente en otro grupo control, asi como en individuos con gingivitis, fluorosis y diabetes, con la finalidad de evaluar las caracteristicas funcionales de la nueva formulacion. Tulisan ini memaparkan tentang discourse kelompok beragama yang ignore terhadap Covid-19. Ada anggapan dari mainstream umat beragama bahwa kelompok ini tidak menggunakan akalnya tetapi menggunakan egonya sehingga mempunyai implikasi sosial yakni menularkan virus SARS-CoV-2 ke orang-orang di dekatnya. El siguiente trabajo tiene por objetivo abordar la revista Sol y Luna y el modo en que esta fue trabajada, especialmente desde la historiografia. Sol y Luna fue una publicacion cultural y doctrinaria impulsada por un sector significativo de la intelectualidad nacionalista de derecha argentina, ligada al catolicismo integrista, que se publico entre 1938 y 1943 y expreso las ideas, principios doctrinarios, intereses, objetivos y proyectos de este. Ademas, la revista se vinculo con el Estado y con la iglesia, se destino a un publico selecto y participo en redes culturales e intelectuales trasnacionales. Este artigo relata a montagem de uma adaptacao da comedia musical portuguesa do Seculo XIX, a magica: A Loteria do Diabo, de Joaquim Augusto de Oliveira, montada por professores e alunos da Escola de Musica e Artes Cenicas (EMAC) da UFG. Suscita reflexoes nos campos da danca, do teatro e da musica e as relacoes educacionais na producao artistica e academica. O trabalho foi desenvolvido na disciplina Oficina do Espetaculo III, do Curso de Artes Cenicas, a partir da adaptacao literaria da obra e a integracao do teatro, da danca e da musica, considerando-se as especificidades destas linguagens. A encenacao incluiu a pesquisa historica do genero, considerando suas caracteristicas peculiares, como a ilusao criada com efeitos especiais e a presenca de uma orquestra acompanhando o coro. A montagem indicou a relevância do dialogo entre as linguagens e o quao delicado e o ato de adaptar uma obra para o universo contemporâneo sem descaracteriza-la.
