De acuerdo con las proyecciones del Consejo Nacional de Población (Conapo), la Zona Metropolitana de la Ciudad de México (zmcm) albergará una población de más de 21 millones de habitantes para 2020. The “Plan Voisin” for Paris dated 1925, is one of the most notorious urban projects by Le Corbusier. In it he implements his first real model of the modern city: “The city of Three Million Inhabitants”, drawn for the Autumn Exhibit on 1922. Both projects have a close and direct relation. While one proposes a theoretical model, the other develops how to implement it in the center of Paris. Therefore, both projects can be understood as the same approach but in two different moments. In Le Corbusier’s books, the graphical representation of the projects reflect this, although the documents tend to contradict it. In his “Œuvre complète”, for example, the number of images differs for each case. While the project “The city of three million Inhabitants” is represented by a generous amount of drawings and plans (around 20 images), the “Plan Voisin” adds up to a maximum of five specific images. As capitalist agriculture developed, urban residents drew their food from ever-more distant producers, through ever-more complicated supply chains and market relations. Connections between town-dwellers and farmers could become distant, or largely contractual (through urban investment in rural land). However, throughout Europe, many urban residents gained access to land and landed resources through their political rights as ‘citizens’, and they retained this even as agrarian capitalism reduced and extinguished ownership by small producers. Although these rights were rarely provided for their full subsistence, they could be financially valuable, as well as politically and symbolically important, and highly distinctive.
This paper explores the relationship between rights of civic political power (or ‘freedom’) and access to common lands and rights in English towns between c. 1500 and c. 1850. Approximately 200 of the c. 800 small, medium, and large English towns conferred these rights on urban ‘freemen’ and their widows, which were mainly grazing rights for cattle on common pastures. The paper sketches a regional typology of these and explores use of these rights through a case-study of the freemen of the Yorkshire borough of Beverley in the nineteenth century (c. 8,000 residents in 1841). It will show how their access to grazing rights provided financial and status benefits for poor craftsmen and tradesmen.
By 1870, only 56 towns (including Beverley) retained such rights. The paper will also show how these civic ‘freedoms’ were eroded, both by agrarian change and by becoming entangled in contests and debates about the nature and rights of urban citizenship in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The histories of architecture in the Iberian World have largely focused on European architects, engineers, and builders (i.e. master masons and carpenters) who travelled from Europe to colonial contexts in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Similarly, the globalisation of architectural design trends, or how design ideas travelled, has been chiefly studied through the dissemination of European architectural treatises across all these regions. Imperial legislation on the building and artistic trades across the former Spanish and Portuguese empires limited and often prohibited minorities from partaking in the trades. Yet recent literature shows that architects and builders of Amerindian descent dominated the building trades in Mexico City and Quito (Mundy 2015; Webster 2011), even as several imperial systems enacted legal mechanisms to silence local, Black, and Indigenous knowledge of structures, materials, and design.

This roundtable discussion brings experts in the field whose recent research overturns assumptions about the role that religious and racial minorities played in the building trades and in cities across the Iberian World. Speakers will discuss architecture, race, segregation and builders across cities and regions of the Iberian World including, Goa, Mexico, Brazil, The Philippines, and Portugal.

This roundtable discussion includes some of the contributors to the roundtable article with the same title edited by Dr Laura Fernández-González and that will be published by the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians in the September 2024 issue.

Speakers include (in no particular order): Professor Barbara Mundy, Tulane University; Dr Miguel Valerio, Washington University in St Louis; Dr Sandra Pinto, University Nova, Lisbon; Dr Sidh Losa-Mendiratta, University of Coimbra, Portugal; and, Amy Chang, PhD Candidate, Harvard.

Laura is Associate Professor in the History of Art and Architecture at The University of Lincoln, an expert in architecture, urbanism and the arts of the Iberian World. Laura's book Philip II of Spain and the Architecture of Empire, (PSUP, 2021) has been commended with an Honourable Mention in the Eleanor Tufts Awards, 2022. She is currently at work on a major book project on four key port-cities of the Iberian world, namely, Lisbon, Goa, Seville and Havana.

In 1929 Alberti published "Sobre los ángeles" and worked on "Yo era un tonto y lo que he visto me ha hecho dos tontos", conceived as a book of poems combined with Mallo's drawings, and on "Sermones y moradas", heavily influenced by her "Cloacas y campanarios" paintings. The poem "La primera ascensión de Maruja Mallo al subsuelo" explores their shared artistic and philosophical concerns. This essay situates the text within the overall context of the couple's activities and offers a detailed reading of it.

La cuarta sección de este libro, “Nuevos horizontes de investigación”, se abre con un capítulo 10 que es obra de este coordinador: “Sublevación popular y linchamiento ‘patriótico’ en la Guerra de la Independencia”. Las sublevaciones patrióticas que marcaron el inicio de la Guerra se vieron acompañadas de la persecución de las máximas autoridades españolas y con frecuencia de su asesinato ritualizado. Más allá del lugar común que supone invocar a unas multitudes desbordadas por las emociones, este proyecto se empeña en combinar –en el análisis– forma, significado y motivación. Los repertorios de acción y los significados implícitos en un “arrastre” nos permiten situar estos fenómenos en una genealogía que se remonta al menos a principios de la Edad Moderna. La sistematización de los datos procedentes de estudios de caso nos proporciona cifras provisionales, listados de víctimas y perpetradores, y nos ayuda a ubicar estos fenómenos en unas coordenadas espacio-temporales, en tres oleadas que se extienden a lo largo de los dos primeros años de guerra. Argumentamos que la impunidad en que se registraron los primeros linchamientos pudo ser un elemento significativo de la sublevación simultánea en gran parte del territorio, a su vez única estrategia de resistencia viable ante la superioridad del ejército napoleónico. Pero esta misma impunidad inicial, unida a la desestructuración del sistema de orden público pudo garantizar la perduración de estos tumultos sangrientos contra los esfuerzos de las autoridades y reproducirse respondiendo ya a nuevas dinámicas.

Il lavoro di tesi proposto è una ricerca mirata alla disidratazione e stabilizzazione di fanghi biologici mediante una specie vegetale, Phragmites australis, in letti drenanti già presenti negli impianti di depurazione. La macrofita radicata partecipa alla disidratazione, mediante evapotraspirazione, del fango di depurazione e crea le giuste condizioni affinché i batteri presenti nella rizosfera compiano una progressiva mineralizzazione e stabilizzazione della sostanza organica. Gli impianti di depurazione utilizzati per questa sperimentazione sono localizzati nella provincia di Pisa (Oratoio e La Fontina) e rappresentano realtà medio-grandi (10.000-30.000 ae). Sono state utilizzate vasche di supero preesistenti negli impianti, opportunamente impermeabilizzate, ricoperte da un substrato granulare (ghiaia) su cui sono stati impiantati i rizomi di Phragmites australis. Luigi Vanvitelli e la nascita della Legislazione di tutela

Demetrio Salazar nel libro Poche parole dette sul sepolcro di Luigi Vanvitelli (Caserta, 1879) difende Luigi Vanvitelli dall’accusa di aver utilizzato per la costruzione della Reggia di Caserta le reliquie dell’anfiteatro campano. Anzi riferisce di un dispaccio firmato a Napoli nel 1728 per la tutela dei monumenti come l’anfiteatro di Capua, a cui ne seguì un secondo datato 13 febbraio 1751 con il quale si vietava di adoperare
“La pietra dell’antiquo Anphiteatro fuera de Capua” per le fabbriche reali, per evitare che l’importante documento romano diventasse una cava per il prelievo di materiali utili alla costruzione della nuova reggia.
Nel 1750, in vista del Giubileo, Papa Benedetto XIV organizzava iniziative spirituali e attività ricettive e faceva riqualificare importanti monumenti romani come la Fontana di Trevi, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme o il
Colosseo, all’epoca impiegato come cava di marmo a cielo aperto, che riuscì a salvare dallo smantellamento consacrandolo come luogo di martirio dei primi cristiani, operazione di una sensibilità alla tutela esemplare per l’epoca, rientrante nei nuovi orientamenti che porteranno alla nascita dei primi musei a destinazione pubblica: i Musei Capitolini, per i quali il papa fondò nel 1748 la Pinacoteca, e il Pio Clementino.
Durante il pontificato di Benedetto XIV (1740-1758), viene firmato infatti dal cardinal Silvio Valenti Gonzaga, segretario di Stato e camerlengo dal 1747 l’Editto Valenti che rappresenta l’apice della legislazione
settecentesca di tutela dello Stato Pontificio, finalizzato a definire i beni sottoposti a tutela e sistemare la legislazione prodotta tra il XVII ed il XVIII secolo. Si vietava l’esportazione di cose antiche e si disponeva la
conservazione delle raccolte, estendendo il divieto anche agli ecclesiastici. L’editto Valenti, in continuità con le norme precedenti pontificie, ed in particolar modo con i due editti del cardinale Albani, nasceva con la
finalità primaria di salvaguardia del pubblico decoro della città di Roma e dello Stato, al fine di conservarne intatte le attrattive turistiche e di studio.
Nella Lettera al fratello Urbano n. 247 del 7 settembre 1754, Vanvitelli chiede due tomi del Museo Capitolino da utilizzare come repertori per gli artisti scultori per le teste all’antica destinate al Giardino della Reggia di
Caserta. In altre lettere rivolge aspre critiche al Papa Benedetto XIV e al cardinale Valenti, che profittando della dabbenaggine del papa ha inferto pesanti pregiudizi al prestigio della Sede Apostolica, tanto da
determinare la pubblicazione di un libro edito in Inghilterra dal titolo Tutte le pazzie di Prospero Lambertini [n. 283 del 24 dicembre 1754].

Ancora nella lettera n. 340 del 13 dicembre 1755 Vanvitelli parla dell’affare
delle statue di Villa d’Este da destinare al Parco di Caserta ma «senza pensare a niente di licenza col Papa» e nell’aprile 1756 [Lettera n. 371 e 372] scrive «nel dopo pranzo andarò a Puzzolo per vedere certe Colonne
Cavate, le quali possono servire per Colonnette nel portico di Caserta».
A Pozzuoli Vanvitelli mette gli occhi su alcune colonne del tempio di Serapide da utilizzare a Caserta, che saranno poi sfogliate e utilizzate nella
Sala di Alessandro (Patturelli, 1826): «ieri fui a Puzzolo per ordine di Sua Maestà a vedere il tempo scavato e vedere alcune colonne di granito e cipollino, che sono ottime per mettere nelli portici dei Cortili di Caserta
per impedire il passaggio delle carrozze; ve ne sono quattro di Porta santa che sono spezzate, ma belle per fare camini o porte per Caserta, onde vi è del bono e da proposito».
L’intervento intende approfondire lo sviluppo della sensibilità della tutela di Luigi Vanvitelli e i rapporti con personalità come il Papa, la famiglia Albani o il cardinale Valenti Gonzaga negli anni dell’Editto Valenti e della
nascita dei primi musei aperti al pubblico. La normativa di tutela dei beni culturali e archeologici è peculiarità tutta italiana e viene inaugurata a Napoli in epoca borbonica con la Prammatica del 1755, su stimolo della
produzione legislativa in materia dello Stato Pontificio.
Nella Prammatica la “salvaguardia dell’identità storica
e patrimoniale del Regno assume carattere di assoluta preminenza” e tutti i “molteplici indotti economico – culturali” della tutela sono considerati tra i vantaggi che altri paesi hanno tratto dal depauperamento del
