Abstract The project Santa Cristina in Caio begins with the research carried out by the Soprintendenza dei Beni Archeologici della Toscana with excavations between 1992 and 1994, and surveys between 1998 and 2003. The name derives from a church attested for the first time in 814, whose ruins were completely destroyed in 1787. Overall, the settlement, located in a short distance from the river Ombrone in Buonconvento valley, seems to exploit the agricultural resources as a privileged source, while remaining within a mixed economy, in which were present handicraft and commercial activities, and the big thermal plant revealed by our excavation (late 1st century B.C.-half of the 4th century A.D.). The Santa Cristina settlement should be recognized in the mansio Umbro flumen, the last mansio before Sena Iulia, inside the diverticulum of the Cassia from Chiusi to Siena. At least the last part of this peripheral Roman road (between Torrenieri and Siena), will be retraced, from the seventh century, by the nascent Francigena. Another theme is that of aquatic routes: the Ombrone contributes decisively to the development of the settlement, encouraging production and trade. The first area excavated revealed a very detailed diachrony and allowed us to investigate a thermal building, used between the last third of the 1st century B.C. and the mid of the 4th century A.D. From the first years of the 5th century the building was turned into a recycling area of construction materials. Were recovered more or less radically all building materials and those that could be riused on site or on the market, as raw materials. They are thus attested glass and lead processing activities. This great phase of spolio of materials is followed by a residential reuse; a new settlement that takes advantage again, as far as possible, of what remains of the ancient baths. The artisan and commercial center features end during the sixth century, when the area of the baths and the surrounding spaces are being occupied by huts. The settlement which reuses the thermal area seems to exist at least until the first decades of the eighth century, while on the Poggio to the huts is already abandoned during the sixth century: after that the area is used as a cemetery. Although currently we don’t have identified the Church of Santa Cristina in Caio mentioned in diploma of 814, but we can assume that the graves are to be linked with this structure. KEY WORDS: ROMAN ROADS, THERMAL IMPLANT, HUT VILLAGE, COMMERCIAL NETWORK, LATE ANTIQUE REUSES
The section contains contributions focusing on the practices and records relating to the economics of hospitals in late medieval Italy. Experts from different disciplines – economic historians, historians of the document, historians of the Middle Ages and of welfare institutions – offer a significant overview of hospitals situated in the north, the center and the south of the Italian peninsula between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. They investigate the mechanisms of funding of charities, the social and public implications of hospital care, the techniques and the accounting systems of revenue and expenditure, and finally, the religious merits connected not only to the care of the poor and sick, but also to the scriptures that recorded this activity.
