Fidelity is one of the most important parameters to consider when dealing with prototypes, which affect the related costs and performances. Current literature contributions often rely on generic definitions of Fidelity based on the concept of closeness. However, the review performed in this paper revealed that Fidelity is a more complex concept, which considers (at least) eight main dimensions, mutually interrelated, and potentially characterized by many other potential sub-dimensions. The identified set has been applied to an industrial case study were a real engineering prototype has been assessed in terms of Fidelity. In particular, the case study application shows how the different dimensions can be interrelated each other. Furthermore, some important research hints have been highlighted in this paper, where the identified set of Fidelity dimensions paves the way for the related future activities.

The aim of the study reported in this paper was to undertake a study about the influence of technology in the form of products that incorporate technology, using a standard methodology developed for this purpose. Examples of products and their shape changes over time were analyzed, to understand the extent to which these changes are consequences of the developments in technology. A review of the evolution of form, taking into account the technology of a selected range of consumer products that incorporate technology, with the aim of deconstructing archetypes that are fixed and propose new ideas was accomplished. In particular, a range of technologies that are foreseen for the future were considered. Selecting specific cases of products, from a historical perspective, one can see what have been the determinants of their shape, which led to the establishment of their archetypal form. A comparative methodology was developed, in order to "decode" the role of technology as a determinant of the shape of products. Understanding the importance of technology as a modeling influence for products' form, what role this has in the consumer society, and what is its responsibility as a major element in the deconstruction of the archetypes of form is intended in this study. The influence of technology in the transformation of products is demonstrated, considering three distinct types of alterations caused by changes in technology, in a tripartite view, which focuses on: product changes, in the cases where technological change leads to a radical change of product form; product change, if technological change is not reflected so much in the change of form, but rather in the performance and the yield of the product; and, ultimately, change in the product in the event of technological change leading to a deconstruction of the product as an object. It is emphasized that the product as a physical object may disappear or may be dissolved in the environment or the architecture, with the advent of emerging technologies and their new capabilities that will certainly cause changes in the shape of products.

This contribution is developed in a two stage process. On the first part, an
attempt to identify the Portuguese identity reflected in the design of existing
products is made. In the second part of this work, product design
specifications are created base on the assignment of product personalities to
capture Portuguese and Lusophone cultural aspects. Both stages of the
contribution give rise to new concepts, which are aimed at representing
cultural values transferred to objects. In both stages of the research, an array
of product features is drawn up, in the first case from observation, in the
second case from matching of cultural traits with product features, through
product personality assignment. The results of both streams of analysis do
not match entirely. This suggests that there is a space yet to be filled for a
culturally inspired design current to take the space of design production with
a Lusophone flavour, possibly for international dissemination.

Kaizen Group : Progress Report.

Chem-E-Car is an annual competition for students majoring in Chemical Engineering. Chem-E-Car is developed based on chemical energy and it is a competition designed to highlight the skills of chemical engineering students. Competing teams able to get an exciting opportunity to take part in a team based challenge involving the hands-on design and construction of a small car powered by a chemical reaction. Students must design a prototype of an automobiles that operates by chemical means, assisted with a poster to describe their invention. The car developed will be loaded with 0-500 mL of water and is required to move to a certain distance. The exact distance (15-30 meters) and the load will be revealed to the participants an hour before the competition. Few important rules must be obeyed by the participants. They are;
(i) the size of the car must not exceed the maximum dimension which is 20x30x40 cm,
(ii) the car must be powered through a “green” method,
(iii) no waste/pollution (in any form including visible liquid or gas) should be created in moving the car.

"Abstract:
Having received growing attention in recent years, despite having been a
source of inspiration for as long as design exists, design inspired by
nature, or bionic design, is getting to the forefront of the search for
environmental sustainability. A number of design methods, intended
especially to guide students and professionals from several design
disciplines, such as industrial design, or engineering design, in carrying
out the development of biologically inspired design, have been proposed.
The paper establishes a comparative analysis between six methods,
retrieved from literature. The methods are presented in similar depth, and
the parameters of analysis are also described. The analysis is based on the
scrutiny of the six selected methods, in relation to the support given
towards the attainment of four goals (form optimization, organisational
effectiveness, multiple requirements satisfaction and paradigm innovation
for improved functional performance), considered of paramount importance to typical design endeavours aiming at achieving innovative
concepts, optimization of specific features or performance and
environmental sustainability. The comparative analysis is intended to
support designers in the process of selecting a design method that is
adequate to the problem at hand. The analysis also identifies goals where
the methods considered offer no or reduced support for their attainment,
hence identifying the need for novel methodological proposals. As a
conclusion, the requirement to integrate validation activities in the bionic
design processes is emphasized.

This study aims to determine the performance of the engineering students in terms of their final grade in the research project and its relationship with the result of course feedback survey in the research course and research experience. Descriptive type of research was utilized in the study with the engineering students enrolled in their undergraduate research course and conducting design project and feasibility study. Results revealed that the engineering students obtained very good rating in the final grades in research project but they experienced difficulty in writing and conducting research and considered the research process as not interesting activity. Various levels of experiences and interpretation of engineering students in the research process make them diverse on what they believe is either easy or difficult but they see positively the course feedback in contrast with the level of their research experience. Motivating students to write simple research as early as first year will somehow provide them a sense of appreciation regarding the nature and benefits of offering solutions to the problems of the community.

Virtual Reality has opened countless paths for people to experience activities that would be deemed dangerous. With the advent of affordable, consumer-level virtual reality appliances appearing in the market in the last 5 years, more and more dangerous sports have become virtually accessible to the general public at a fraction of their real-life prices. Air sports is one of those dangerous sports, with thousands of novice fliers involving themselves in accidents every year around the world. Paragliding/paramotoring training usually takes place on the field, where injuries are prone to occur. This research project aims to rectify this problem by developing a safe and helpful way for beginners to learn and experience the thrill of paramotoring from the comfort of their homes. The project utilises a 2-DOF parallel mechanism that can simulate both roll and pitch movement, which at first may sound limited, but is very convincing once the mind is tricked by visual and auditory cues. 2-DOF parallel manipulators also answer the question of cost, as the number of moving parts is less than conventional 6-DOF motion platforms such as the Stewart Platform. This project aims to deliver on the experience of piloting a paramotor trike in landed and aerial modes, in recreational or training scenarios as well as provide path planning and live monitoring by the trainer. The motion seat is designed to be powered by two linear actuators, which attach to the back of the seat to deliver the pitch and roll motions. The software is designed in Unity, a free game development engine with support for virtual reality content.

Design is a broad field of making and planning disciplines. These include industrial design, graphic design, textile design, furniture design, information design, process design, product design, interface design, transportation design, systems design, urban design, design leadership and design management and well as architecture, engineering, information technology, and computer science. Around the world, conferences, colloquia, seminars, and discussions now focus on design research and on the kinds of design theory that support fruitful research. One purpose of these conferences and meetings is to analyze the field. Another is to generate, develop, and articulate streams of research and theory construction.

Main goal of this paper is to present the methodology for product development and design. A bicycle stand product is chosen as a case study. Presented methodology is a process with several steps which include definition of problem, generating several concept designs, analysis of generated designs, choosing the best concept design, development of virtual prototype and development of real prototype. Presented methodology can be used for development and design of any product. Process of development of virtual and real prototype is presented in more detail. Virtual prototype is developed using advanced computer aided design technologies. Real prototype is developed and manufactured using advanced additive manufacturing technology.

Given the reality, and the social,
economic and environmental concerns of today, it is considered that
designers are expected to adopt project tactics that meet the emerging
challenges. Nature as a source of unique and autonomous resources can
foster creativity and a variety of effective and sustainable solutions. Design
that draws on natural metaphors is meant to narrow the relation between
Nature and the project-oriented field.
In the second part of the chapter, the origins and the path of evolution of this
approach are presented with definitions given and arguments to strengthen
the consideration of its importance for designers are suggested. Through
comparative analysis of naturally inspired and conventional design solutions
to implement the same functionality, inquiry about the gains that can be
achieved with this approach are sought using a set of criteria for this
purpose.
A project was developed by traveling the metaphorical routes between
Nature and design. Thus, a bionic tower for CDs and DVDs was designed,
representing a paradigm innovation in offering this functionality, as it is
based on inspiration gathered from the observation of the spider web.

This paper reports on a study of basic premises of 'pleasure with products' theoretical constructs and approaches. Three hypotheses were generated: people actively seek pleasure through their choice of products in their everyday life, people recognize and can discriminate between the four pleasure framework applied to products, and people seek both need pleasures and pleasures of appreciation. 82 respondents, sampled from the Portuguese university community, in a deliberate choice of a more verbally trained population subgroup, answered the questionnaire. The results support the acceptance of the three hypotheses. The examples collected ilIustrate products relevant for pleasure requirements consideration. © Denis A. Coelho, 2003.

This project proposes an economic paper shredder for the use of corporate and university. The paper shredder is primarily eco-friendly by producing small and light waste that is recyclable into mulch. Besides that, the paper shredder is also convenient and immediate to be used as well as effective in terms of the security level of shredded paper. The paper shredder is primarily economic with reasonable quality. Also, the dimension of the paper shredder is of fit-on-table size with easy-to-carry weight and thus making the economic paper shredder portable and convenient to use. The problems of existing paper shredder that to be resolved are identified through the method of problem identification. The tools that the team implement are customer survey, brainstorming and literature review. Concept generation and evaluation are done using the method of Pugh’s chart. The method is practical and convenient in evaluating the potential feature of a paper shredder numerically. The process of design embodiment consists of layout design and the necessary engineering calculation and analysis using computer-aided engineering software. The detail design includes the finalized design, drawings of parts and assembly and also the analysis of cost. The prototyping process provides the details of fabrication. This part of progress also provides the manual of the product and the product testing results.

This study discusses how product design and product quality affect consumer satisfaction in Bang Mus Hand Made Shoes UMKM. The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of product design and product quality that can affect consumer satisfaction in Bang Mus Hand Made Shoes UMKM. The sampling technique used a questionnaire with a number of questionnaires of 100 respondents who were consumers in Bang Mus Hand Made Shoes UMKM. The independent variables in this study are Product Design (X1) and Product Quality (X2), while the dependent variable in this study is customer satisfaction (Y). The analytical test tool used is SPSS 21 Multiple Linear Regression Analysis Method. The results showed that product design had a positive and significant effect on customer satisfaction, product quality had a positive and significant effect on customer satisfaction, and product design and product quality together had a positive and significant effect on customer satisfaction.

Current (2016) capstone requirements for the Manufacturing Design Engineering degree.  The Motorcycle Helmet Design project must include scientific scholarly literature, and the end product must adhere to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218 (49 CFR Sec. 571.218).

As industry sectors mature, a critical challenge confronting many companies is how to provide users with engaging experiences within a product ecosystem (e.g., a subway station ecosystem). User experience goes far beyond cognitive aspects to encompass affective aspects, where the former accommodates users’ cognitive capabilities, tendencies, and limitations while the latter concerns how to elicit desirable emotional responses from users. Both aspects have major impacts on each other and importantly influence user satisfaction.
Although companies have long been concerned with users in the product design and development process, the emphasis has been on the cognitive aspects to support users’ cognitive processes through human-product interactions, demonstrated as usability studies in the areas of human factors and human-computer interaction. Further, traditional usability studies often consider interactions between the user and a single object (product), ignoring the kind of user interactions in a context of product ecosystems that consist of multiple interdependent products, users, and ambient factors (e.g., environmental settings and cultural factors). On the other hand, user pleasure has been considered in the new development of human factors and ergonomics; affective human-computer interaction is also gradually being recognized. From a holistic perspective, it is imperative to study user experience design incorporating its two essential dimensions, i.e., the affective dimension and the cognitive dimension, in the context of product ecosystems.
This research develops a conceptual model that elaborates the operational mechanism of key factors underlying product ecosystems for user experience design while leveraging both affective and cognitive dimensions of users. In addition, a technical framework is proposed to drive product ecosystem design for user experience with rigorous engineering methods. The technical framework has three consecutive and iterative steps, i.e., affective-cognitive need elicitation, affective-cognitive analysis, and affective-cognitive fulfillment.
Toward this end, multiple physiological measures acquired from wearable sensors are applied to support affective need elicitation and prediction with three different types of models for comparison. A system based on case-driven ambient intelligence is developed to address cognitive need acquisition and analysis for elderly in-home assistance applications. To deal with affective-cognitive analysis, a technique named fuzzy reasoning Petri nets is proposed, considering product ecosystem formation, user experience modeling in terms of affective responses and cognitive task processes, as well as operational cost for a subway station ecosystem design. A hybrid data mining and refinement system is put forward to leverage both forward and backward affective mapping for affective need fulfillment in the context of a truck cab interior ecosystem design. The results of these endeavors towards the affective-cognitive design of product ecosystems for user experience suggest the significance of the research problem as well as the feasibility and potential of the proposed framework.

This paper articulates the potentials and limitations of the existing techniques for adapting product information contents for transmission among heterogeneous terminal devices and networks. The principal aim of the work was to understand, through a literature survey and empirical investigations, the affordances of the existing content adaptation techniques with a view to using handheld devices in performing product development tasks. Specifically, we reviewed and analyzed a wide range of the existing and emerging content adaptation techniques. The review has both revealed the potentials and shortcomings of the prevailing content adaptation strategies, and also has raised several questions for further research. Among the main shortcomings include lack of suitable mechanisms for adapting some specific contents used in product development such as for adapting 3D product models in context; and the inability of the existing mechanisms to guarantee the synchronization of both the meaning and the context of the content among heterogeneous terminal devices whilst meeting both resource constraints and task requirements. We have also identified the characteristic features we expect an ideal content adaptation mechanism to encompass, and used them as the basis for assessing the extents to which the existing techniques meet the adaptation requirements in product development. A concept and a generic architecture for content adaptation in a product development environment have subsequently been proposed. Overall, the existing content adaptation solutions provide only a subset of the desirable functional features. What is needed is a comprehensive adaptation mechanism, which among other things, handles 3D models and other types of product data; guarantees the synchronization of both the context and the meaning of the information content; considers the constraints posed by the heterogeneity of terminal devices and networks, and which at the same time also takes into account the task requirements and the specific needs and preferences of the users (who in the context of the work reported in this paper are the designers and engineers).

This paper aims at developing a technically sound and conceptually engineered ATV called quad bike. This paper describes in detail the procedure followed, methodology used and the considerations made in the entire design process. First the design approach is discussed and then the resulting design procedure and design analysis has been explained. Due efforts have been put to validate the design by theoretical calculations, simulations and known facts. Through this paper, an effort has been made to introduce a reliable yet cheaper methodology for industrial quad bike designing and simulation that may be used as a reference for many upcoming industries as well as many research and development projects.

To design and develop new innovative products or services is required management and generation of new ideas following methodologies to achieve true innovative solutions that meet the needs of users and target customers.

Due to the alliance since 2007 between Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Cali, and Stanford University, the Engineering Faculty of Javeriana in Cali works in collaboration with d.School at Stanford and SUGAR network (Global Stanford University Alliance for Redesign) in the design and development of new innovative products or services within the global course ME310 Design Innovation with Corporate Partners following the design thinking methodology.

The global course ME310 Design Innovation with Corporate Partners has been recognized by the National Accreditation Council (CNA) as one of the best practices of internationalization in Colombian higher education institutions. For the execution of each project, an interdisciplinary and intercultural team of 3 or 4 Javeriana students and 3 or 4 Stanford students or any of the universities belonging to the SUGAR network. In Javeriana, after a careful process, are selected 3 or 4 of the best undergraduate fifth year of the Engineering Faculty or Design program.

During 9-month duration of each project, the innovation team conformed faces different stages of divergence and convergence following the design thinking methodology and by designing and developing multiple prototypes arrive finally to a functional prototype that satisfies the needs of the target users and solve the problem proposed by the company.

For 9 years, 30 new products and services have been developed for international companies such as Autodesk, Kodak, Panasonic, Tupperware, Telefonica, Yanmar, Valeo, Berg, Mustela and Lapeyre, and Colombian companies as Belcorp, Banco de Occidente, Carvajal, El País, Forsa, Totto and Grupo SURA.

Exploring the validity of Language based Universal Principles and Parameters in design, this research produces a series of comparative studies examining the relationship between language and design, each deploying a different methodology, working towards different goals, and dealing with different aspects of the relationship between these two seemingly distinctive abilities.
The main question of this research is - Can various aspects, that are at play in the universality of language, also be at play in the universality of design. In seeking to answer this question this research short term goals are:
• To inform and explore the relationship between language use and design use.
• To inquire into the structural dynamics between language and design, as competences and as activities.
• To examine the validity of Universal Structure theories from the fields of Linguistics and Structuralism in Design.

Recreational vehicle (RV) manufacturers have traditionally been viewed as having no direct effect on caravanning experiences beyond their role as the suppliers of the vehicles. Drawing on the theoretical approach known as service-dominant logic, this paper suggests that RV manufacturers play an active role in the co-creation of tourism experiences. This study adopted the framework developed by Storbacka, K., Brodie, R. J., P., Böhmann, T., Maglio P. P., & Nenonen, S. [(2016). Actor engagement as a microfoundation for value co-creation. Journal of Business Research, 69(1), 3008–3017] that considers engagement as a microfoundation of value co-creation to investigate value co-creation in this context. A template analysis of the data collected from in-depth interviews with all Italian motorhome manufacturers revealed themes relating to five issues: engaging actors, engaging platforms, actors’ dispositions, engagement properties and resource integration patterns. The theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are discussed.

Innovation is becoming the most important key issue for company’s success in the 21st century. In the competitive environment is necessary for the enterprises to put together different capabilities and services with the goal. It’s a widely accepted that innovation is better achieved by working in team. The employed web services technology, although very popular nowadays but it is still not mature enough, so dealing with it can bring new findings. Virtual teams base on information technology are formed to facilitate transnational innovation processes and it should be noted that innovation has a positive impact on corporate performance. Information and communication technology has brought about significant changes in organizations and produced important benefits, including in the areas of innovation which is recognized as a prime source of national competitive advantage.
This contribution proposes a conceptual model for understanding and analyzing the process of virtual R&D team as an innovation and technology assimilation facilitator. The context of the knowledge-based economy introduces a major shift from serial to simultaneous R&D in the way of idea conception to technology creation is conceived. This paper briefly reviews the existing perspectives on virtual teams and their effect on innovation and technology. It also discusses the main characteristics of virtual teams and clarifies the differences aspects of virtual team application in the topic. To support the theoretical analysis, this paper provides a comprehensive review based on authentic and reputed publications. We argue that scanty research has been conducted to facilitate understanding the problem of systematically governing creative innovation toward a technology through virtual R&D teams.

This research was funded by, and implemented within, a UK national research organisation, while the author was the KE and Impact Evaluation Manager responsible for assessing impact on a £15m UK government-funded research programme.

This work was also submitted as the authors MBA dissertation which was accepted and awarded in 2009.

ABSTRACT: A methodology and methods ‘toolbox’ is proposed for conducting impact research and assessment from within research programmes. The emphasis is upon how to clarify and assess the wider impacts from the early stages onwards.

The approach explicitly acknowledges, and attempts to address, the known issues and challenges of impact assessment while drawing upon the resources and opportunities available to research managers and researchers within such programmes.

The study has two triangulating foundations. Firstly, it examines the academic literature to help identify and design the pilot methodology and methods. Secondly it trials these in a real programme to both test and improve them.

The study was conducted over one year within one leading UK research organisation, where two research programmes (and around 60 research projects of £15m total value) were being assessed for their impacts. The study draws upon actual impact management experience and reflection, prospective (ex ante) and retrospective (ex post) assessments, participatory contributions from leading researchers undergoing assessment, and consultation with external users. The findings of this study outline the pilot and its first iteration. Recommendations are made for improvement to the methodology and methods.

A subsequent follow-on bid to UK government incorporating the impacts identified from implementing this methodology, successfully led to a further £15m of government funding.

It is expected the pilot methodology and methods will be applicable to other organisations, conducting and funding such research programmes, required to research and assess the wider research impacts.

Although primary focus of implemetation trials was upon research in physical sciences, technology, high-tech engineering, computing/IT, and environment, the wider literature study, the methodology design and justification, the methods proposed and used, and the resulting general recommendations and lessons are expected to apply more broadly to many other research areas, where the impact is to be found more widely in the society, economy, government or public sector or within organizations, policies, professions or the public.

Interest in this work is expected from research programme managers, impact managers and assessors, management consultants advising in this area, and government funding managers, all seeking to embed a developing approach to understand, capture, and enhance wider impact.
